Glynronthey Many sources state the meaning of Rhondda as ‘noisy’, though this is a simplified translation without research. Locals tend to refer to “The Rhondda” with the definite article , despite its non-usage on sign posts and maps. Early history[ edit ] Prehistoric and Roman Rhondda: The landscape of the Rhondda was formed by glacial action during the last ice age , as slow moving glaciers gouged out the deep valleys that exist today.
This left the two river valleys of the Rhondda with narrow, steep sided slopes which would dictate the layout of settlements from early to modern times. A small chipped stone tool found at the site, recorded as possibly being of ‘ Creswellian ‘ type or at least from the early Mesolithic period, places human activity on the plateau above the valleys. Though no definite Mesolithic settlements have been located in the area, the concentration of finds at the Craig y Llyn escarpment suggests the presence of a temporary campsite in the vicinity.
The remains of a rectangular hut with traces of drystone wall foundations and postholes was discovered; while carbon dating of charcoal found at the site dated the structure as late Neolithic. The best example of a round-cairn was found at Crug yr Afan, near the summit of Graig Fawr, west of Cwmparc. The cairn consisted of an earthen mound with a surrounding ditch 28 metres in circumference and over 2 metres tall.
The items did not originate from the Rhondda and are thought to have been left at the site as a votive offering. Of particular interest were fragments of an iron sword which is the earliest iron object to be found in Wales and the only ‘C-type’ Hallstatt sword recorded in Britain.

Victoria Burgess, 27, of Melfort Road, Newport, was filmed beating her victim to the ground before sitting on top of her and biting through her ear in a drunken attack at Yummies kebab house in Newport city centre on April 6 this year. Newport Crown today heard that Burgess, a previous employee of the South Wales Argus, had known her victim for four years and had been considered a “good and trusted friend”. But after a night out in the city centre dissolved into an argument about giving money to a homeless woman, prosecutor Bethan Evans told the court that a fight broke out in the kebab shop.
Shocking video captures moment a mum-of-one bit through the ear of her friend in a kebab shop brawl “The defendant started screaming at her, something about stealing,” Ms Evans told the court. She picked it up, then threw it back down, horrified. During her police interview, Burgess originally told police she had acted in self defence, but the court heard that she pleaded guilty to wounding with intent as soon as she was shown the CCTV footage by her legal representatives.
Defending, Andrew Kendall told the court there was no mitigation possible for the offence which took place. But Mr Kendall pointed to the defendant’s relatively good character, and pointed to references from friends, former colleagues and family members, who were present in court. Burgess broke down twice and received treatment from court staff in the dock as the Jude Daniel Williams passed down his sentence.
Burgess will serve at least half of her sentence before being released.
